What is the Energy Savings Scheme?
The Energy Savings Scheme reduces electricity consumption in NSW by creating financial incentives for organisations to invest in energy saving projects. Energy savings are achieved by Accredited Certificate Providers installing, improving or replacing energy savings equipment. This includes more efficient Air conditioning systems.
How does the program work?
Financial incentives are in the form of tradeable certificates, called energy savings certificates (ESCs). Generally, householders and businesses who fund energy savings activities transfer the right to create ESCs to Accredited Certificate Providers (ACPs) in return for a discount on the cost of the energy savings activity. The notional megawatt hours attributed to energy savings activities determines the number of ESCs that can be created.
What incentives are available for householders and small businesses.
Householders and small businesses may be able to benefit from a range of energy efficiency upgrades in their homes or businesses such as:
- High efficiency or LED lighting upgrades
- Replacing electric or gas water heaters
- Installing or replacing existing air conditioners
- Replacing windows or doors with thermally efficient windows or doors
- Installing or replacing existing pool pumps
- Installing efficient showerheads
- And more!
Residential and small business upgrades are performed by businesses that are accredited under the ESS.
What is the eligible incentive for Air Conditioners?
Unlike a rebate, the discount on the installation cost of your air conditioner is provided as an incentive. The incentive is paid directly by an accredited supplier, known as an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP), who will pass on the discount to you. The accredited supplier is the business you choose to work with to install your new air conditioner.
If you’re eligible, incentives could range between:
- $340 and $560 if you install a new 6kWh air conditioner system in Sydney.
- $440 and $730 if you replace an old air conditioner with a 6kw split system in Sydney.
Your discount is set by the accredited supplier and may be different to the incentive amount.
These upfront incentives are in addition to the long-term lower operation costs of a more energy-efficient appliance.
